 A gear is a special device or machine which is used to transmission of power from one shaft to another shaft. This device is places between two shafts for good power transmission. In other hand, it is a type of machine which is used to transfer rotating motion from first shaft to second shafts is known as Gear. 


There are many ways to transfer that is Puli, or chain system to transfer power from one shaft to another shaft. But gear are used to transfer power from very short of shafts. If the distance is large then Puli or chain system is used to transfer energy. 


A gear is also used to control the speed of shaft. Suppose there is two shafts which are connected to gear. If we want to increase or decrease the speed of another through first shafts through the help of gear, then the size of first gear is less then the size of another gear. Another case if you want to decrease speed then first shaft is bigger size as compared to second shafts.

So, the first gear called driving gear and another called driven gear. If the diameter of driving gear is less then the driven gear then  the speed become increases. And, if the diameter of driven gear is less then driving gear then the speed of movementum decrease. 

Types of gear:-

There are various ways to classified the different types of gears are:-

According to the position of axes of the shafts:-
(a). Parallel
1. Spur gear
2. Helical gear
3. Rack and pinion

(b). Interesting
Bevel gear

(c). Non intersecting and non parallel
Worm and worm gears
Let us study in details.

1. Spur gear:- The gears in which teeth is parallel to the axis of rotation. And, teeth of gears become interlocking to each for good power transmission. It's easy to manufacturer and it's low or cheaper in cost. It is a very noice in nature. It is used in washing machine, electric screw drive, wirdup alram, etc. 

2. Helical gear:- In this type of gear, the teeth is incident it at a angle. This is less noise then spur gear. The meshing of both gear are  smooth aur gradually smooth engagement. 

3. Rack and pinion:- It is a type of spur gear because it's teeth is parallel to the axis of rotation. There one gear in the form of pinion and other gear in the form of rack. The infinite diameter of rack gear. In this gear, the rotatory motion convert into linear motion. 

4. Bevel gear:- The gear in which shafts are connected in perpendicular to each other and power easily transfer. It is used in locomotive, auto mobile, power plant, etc. 

5. Worm and worm gear:- In this type of gear input given to worm due to this worm wheel move. The direction of shaft is non parallel and nor intersecting. The worm and worm gear are used to reduce speed of gear. it is used in machine handling, machine tool, transportation, automobile, etc.

Advantage of gear drive:-

1. Constant velocity ratio.
2. Transmission of power at low speed always.

4. Easy transmission of power at minimum and maximum limit.

Limitation of gear drive:-

1. The manufacturing cost of gear is costly technique and need special equipment. 
2. A large amount of lubrication is required in gear driving operation. 
3. Due to the in correct alignment, defected teeth, lots of noise and vibration and producer.
